How Much Fun Can Thursdays Be in Austin?-Check out 1st Thursday on South Congress Downtown
“First Thursday” is a must see, uniquely Austin event that takes place along South Congress Avenue, from Barton Springs Road to Elizabeth Street. It is one big downtown block party that you and the kids will absolutely love.
On the first Thursday of each month, (hence the clever name…) all of the stores along South Congress that normally close early stay open late, some even later than 10 p.m. Not only is it a great time to take advantage of the many store bargains, but if you are a bit “thirsty” it is very well know that many stores will give out some kinds of drinks on these nights. “Adult” versions can be found as well at various restaurants and bars and though they won’t be completely free, many a drink special make it a great time to try some local drinks with Austin Flare.
The South Congress area is pedestrian friendly. You can enjoy the entire event by foot. It is a great opportunity for one of my favorite pastimes, people-watching!
In additions, in several different parking lots along South Congress, one being in the open lot next to Italian restaurant Vespaio, local arts and crafts vendors set up dozens of booths and sell their goods. You can find handcrafted jewelry, photography and art, pottery, homemade soap, clothes and more. It is the perfect opportunity for gift shopping, and finding the perfect Keep Austin Weird Gift!
During First Thursday, local musicians and performers set up and play on the sidewalks. You can also head over to the Continental Club for some great live music while you’re out there. After all Austin is the live music capitol, and there is no shortage of entertainment
First Thursday is full of local flavor. If you have a guest in from out of town, taking them to this event is a great way to introduce them to Austin and all of its wonderful weirdness.
I personally enjoy “1st Thursday,” as it is a chance to get out downtown, enjoy some great Austin food and merchants, as well as experience the downtown vibe that has made Austin known as a hip, fun retreat from the suburbs.
Along with enjoying the sites of “1st Thursday,” this would be a great opportunity to drive thru some of the downtown neighborhoods and see what Austin living is all about. From the plethora of Downtown Skyscraping condo’s, to the unique Austin homes that surround the downtown, and Zilker park areas, living downtown can be your hub to all the nightlife and events that happen year round, in the wonderful city of Austin
